Thank you Susan Howe for explaining to me how to keep weevils (and other critters) out of my wheat!
Let’s go back a little. As a child, I loved to eat Grape-Nuts cereal for breakfast but every so often, I would find live creatures floating in the milk [insert grossed out face here]. Then I would decide to not eat that cereal for months (or longer). When my cravings got the best of me, I would try again and enjoy a box or two until one day, the floaters were back. This cycle continued throughout my childhood.
As an adult, I would use wheat flour to bake bread, make waffles, or even cookies (check out the best Pumpkin Cookie Recipe). Imagine my dismay at seeing little critters in my wheat!
Once found, I would scour my cupboards, clean up all crumbs, deep clean the entire kitchen to ensure we had nothing left alive. After years of this cycle happening, I was speaking with my friend Susan who mentioned that (don’t continue to read if you don’t want to know the truth), the eggs are in the flour. If we don’t do anything to prevent them from hatching, we will have bugs in our food. Gross, I know!
She also gave me a solution! Freeze the flour before using it! Given my challenge with Grape-Nuts, I also freeze (then refrigerate) my cereal. Guess what? I haven’t had bugs in my food since I followed her advice. After I grind my wheat into flour, the bowl goes into the fridge for 24 hours. The bags of flour from the store go in the freezer until I’m ready to use them. What a relief!
