Looking to Change?

my bifocalsWhat wonderful, challenging, pick an adjective type of news I had this week!  Most people would dread hearing that they need bi-focal glasses but for me, the news meant that my vision problems were not related to Multiple Sclerosis.  Relief!

Reality check when I got the new lenses my eyes hurt, I woke up with a headache, and I found myself taking off my glasses frequently.  Today is better because they adjusted the location of the reading part of the lens.  But will I get used to it?

When dealing with change, there are 4 stages.

  1. Unconsciously incompetent meaning you are doing things wrong but aren’t aware of it.
  2. Consciously incompetent meaning you know you are doing things wrong but you haven’t fixed the problem yet.
  3. Consciously competent meaning you are thinking about how you are fixing things.
  4. Unconsciously competent meaning you are doing things right without thinking.

tabboulehImagine a new diet plan, for example.  Before you learned how many vegetables you should be eating, you were likely not eating enough (stage 1).  Next you learn how beneficial they are but don’t know how to prepare them (I’m in this stage with quinoa – it’s a very nutritious grain but I don’t cook it very often = stage 2).

When you decide to make a change, such as me getting my new lenses, you are actively thinking about the changes you are making.  For me, I’m consciously thinking about adjusting how my head tilts as I read or look at things around me. This mindful effort belongs in stage 3.  Our goal is to make the healthy habits part of our routine where we don’t think about them any more (stage 4).
